In Bolton, Connecticut, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you need tests for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in these procedures, providing services through our centers across cities nationwide. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is required for testing. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly favored in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair tests to the usual urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and for probationary requirements due to their extended detection period, up to 90 days, conducted through observed collection, making it nearly foolproof. However, for detection of recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Hair collected near the scalp can offer an alcohol and drug detection period of up to about 3 months. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample size of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) measuring 1.5 inches from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional testing, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale is advised for determining the specimen's weight. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable volume of body hair may be utilized. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Explanation

The drug test result processing in a lab involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process incorporates validating that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although it is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation for legal validity. All samples that test positive in the Screening phase need further confirmation.

In cases of positive preliminary results during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. This phase entails extracting drugs from hair at a significantly lower density than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most complex approaches to perform.

Confirmation of positive results from Screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests that have a shorter detection window.
  • High difficulty to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, adding to the accuracy of results.
  • Tracks historical usage: It establishes a timeline of drug consumption over time, not just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes an estimated 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is a misnomer, as the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
