Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing solutions in Columbia, Connecticut. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing services with facilities in every city across the nation ready to conduct a hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in drug testing methods. Many employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now opt for hair analysis rather than traditional urine tests. It's favored by zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation departments. Its chief advantage lies in an extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it highly tamper-proof. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by ensnaring biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When clipped close to the scalp, hair offers a detection span for alcohol and other drugs lasting up to roughly three months. Hair is easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 strands of hair (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above ten, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four central steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This phase encompasses ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any necessary data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to exclude drug usage for the vast majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening step, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than in alternative methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is undertaken via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is appraised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, yielding more accurate results.
  • Historical data provision: It offers a drug use pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: The test, although often called "hair follicle tests", evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Columbia, CT, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing due to its superior detection and reliability. While urine tests catch recent drug usage, hair analysis reveals substance use over a longer span, ensuring employers obtain a comprehensive perspective of an individual's habits.

Unlike urine tests that may miss certain drugs or metabolites, hair analysis offers a robust detection capacity. Its broader window captures historical substance use, providing a more reliable assessment for any organization looking to enforce drug-free policies effectively.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Columbia, CT extends the detection window to a substantial 90 days, offering employers a well-rounded view of an individual's drug use history. This extended period ensures the reflection of not just recent, but also past substance use.

By incorporating hair analysis into their drug testing protocols, companies gain insight into the substance habits of potential or current employees, making informed decisions based on comprehensive data that stretches over months.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Columbia, CT, hair follicle testing significantly reduces tampering risks, presenting virtually irrefutable results. This method is less susceptible to sample adulteration than other testing techniques, reinforcing the reliability of outcomes.

The hair collection process is rigorous, with samples collected under supervision to preclude manipulation. Employers can thus rest assured knowing that results reflect genuine substance patterns without the fear of compromise common in alternate testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
