Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Southington, Connecticut. Specializing in both hair drug and alcohol tests, we boast nationwide testing centers, including those capable of conducting hair analyses. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, obtainable from either the scalp or body, to undergo testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now opt for hair testing over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probationers find hair tests advantageous as they offer an extended drug use detection window—up to 90 days—and undergo an observed collection, making them difficult to falsify. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by locking in biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When clipped near the scalp, hair can present nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred sample for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. When speaking of head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core steps involved in processing a laboratory drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid check for substances of abuse. While screening is a cost-efficient method to discount most samples' drug use, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples that return presumptively positive during Screening require a further confirmation test.

Should a sample yield a presumptively positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The entirety of the laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in compliance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical data: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, not just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become identifiable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing procedures.
  • Result variation: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Southington, CT, hair follicle tests surpass traditional urine tests due to their enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. These tests can uncover drug use patterns that urine tests often miss, ensuring that no illicit substance usage goes unnoticed.

With up to a 90-day detection period, hair testing offers unmatched insight into an individual's substance habits. While urine tests only capture the short-term usage, hair tests deliver a broader view of drug consumption.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle testing method excels with its extended detection window of up to 90 days, offering employers in Southington, CT an extensive overview of a person's substance use history. This wide-ranging detection period is invaluable for assessing an employee's or applicant’s long-term drug habits.

Compared to other testing options that may only record recent substance use, hair testing provides a broad perspective, indispensable for informed decision-making in employment or other assessments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests greatly reduce sample adulteration risks, ensuring that results are both reliable and valid. In Southington, CT, this testing method offers a tamper-resistant alternative, eliminating the fraudulent practices sometimes encountered with urine testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
