Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis across Christiana, Delaware. If a hair-based drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this testing method, with centers nationwide. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair assessments.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common for drug screenings. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer these tests over standard urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies utilize them due to their extended drug detection period of up to 90 days and observation collection process, making tampering virtually impossible. However, for detecting drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in the hair's growth shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers up to a 90-day period for alcohol and drug detection. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch portion, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, ideal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with integrating a sample into the lab's system. This involves confirming the sample's secure sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any missing data not available through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary swift check for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug presence in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to hold up in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower levels than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as required. The laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to cheating: It is nearly impossible to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical usage data: It illustrates a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair Follicle Testing vs. Urine Testing in Christiana, DE shows significant advantages. One key benefit is their superior detection accuracy. Hair tests provide a reliable alternative to urine tests with a more extended detection window and reduce the risk of sample tampering.

Employers in Christiana favor hair testing for its reliable evidence of drug use. Offering longer detection periods and accurate results, hair tests provide a stronger case for evaluating substance history compared to traditional urine analysis.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
