Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Golden Glades, Florida. Whether you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, our specialized testing centers are located nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required, sourced from the crown or body. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred testing method. This form of testing is now an essential requirement by many employers, courts, and substance abuse counselors over the traditional urine tests. It is especially beneficial for organizations with no-tolerance policies. Hair follicle drug tests offer an extended detection window of up to 90 days and are virtually tamper-proof, although urine tests remain most effective for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month history of alcohol and drug use. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, with about 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug testing results consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the early processing of a sample into a lab’s system, which includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial fast assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening need further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are drawn from hair at concentrations lower than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo a wash as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It's extremely tough to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: Can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing has its advantages over traditional urine tests in Golden Glades, FL. Accuracy and reliability top the list, as hair tests can detect substance use across a longer timeline. This reliability means less chance of false results, providing businesses with data they can trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
