Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. If a test for drugs or alcohol is needed, our specialty lies in hair tests, with centers available across all cities in the nation, prepared to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing requirements.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Such hair tests are vital for employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation cases. Their chief advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, conducted with observed collection making it hard to cheat. Nevertheless, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Biomarkers trapped within the growing hair fibers provide a lengthy timeline of substance use. When hair is taken near the scalp, it offers up to around a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we only mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses every other type of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result includes four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step confirms the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While it's economical for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be verified to be legally acceptable. Samples with positive indications during Screening require further confirmation.

If results show positive indications in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging procedure.

The verification of any positive screen result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary samples are cleaned before confirmation. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, offering a longer window compared to urine tests.
  • High test integrity: It is quite challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring high accuracy in results.
  • Chronic use data: Offers an overview of drug use patterns over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use not detected: Drugs appear in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
