Accredited Drug Testing offers hair drug testing services in South Patrick Shores, Florida. Whether you need a drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing with centers in multiple cities nationwide. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair for testing. Our tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to other hair testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for substance detection in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now often prefer it over urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation officers frequently utilize hair tests. They provide an extended drug use detection window of up to 90 days, are collected under observation, and are nearly uncheatable. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a comprehensive historical record of substance use by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the advancing hair strand. When procured from near the scalp, hair can provide up to around a 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it exclusively refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps involved in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This process involves ensuring that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any other data entry tasks not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick check for potential drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than observed in other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • High resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are remarkably resistant to attempts at cheating, thereby ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage pattern: The tests can reveal a history of drug use over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Delay in detecting recent use: It requires about 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Potential for result variations: Individual differences such as hair color and growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the scalp-embedded follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
