Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Southwest Ranches, Florida. If a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field, with testing facilities in every city across the country to conduct hair assessments. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body can be used. Hair evaluations can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Recently, the preference in drug screening methods has shifted more towards hair follicle drug testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are now favoring hair tests over traditional urine analysis. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers often utilize hair follicle testing. The main advantage is its extensive detection period, which can reach up to 90 days, with samples collected under supervision, making them highly tamper-resistant. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When cut near the scalp, hair offers around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and inconspicuous to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 strands of hair (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplements, or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler's scale for measurement is recommended. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a laboratory drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a specimen within a laboratory's infrastructure. This step verifies that the sample remained sealed and was sent correctly, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any unresolved data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening performs a rapid evaluation for misuse of drugs. Though Screening is a budget-friendly method to negate drug use for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid legally. All samples that show a tentative positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a tentative positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a notably reduced concentration than other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening poses the greatest challenge.

Confirmation of any positive screening is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Samples showing presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory method from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Complexity to deceive: Hair tests are very challenging to fake, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical insight: They reveal drug use patterns over time, extending beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur greater costs than other testing approaches.
  • Result inconsistency: Variables like hair color and growth differences may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite frequently being termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
