Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Chattanooga Valley, Georgia. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we maintain testing centers in cities across the Nation to facilitate this. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is needed for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specialized testing options.

In recent times, the preference for conducting drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle tests. Many employers, the judiciary, and Substance Abuse specialists now favor a hair drug test over a traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are sought by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, the court system, and probationary individuals. The main advantage of hair tests is their extensive drug detection time frame, typically up to 90 days, which entails an observed collection method, making them hard to circumvent. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers in the strands of developing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug usage within a roughly 3-month timeframe. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch specimen containing approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for examination and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory drug test result processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the introductory processing within a laboratory's system. This step checks that the sample is sealed and correctly dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial review for drug presence. It is cost-effective for excluding drug use across most samples, but a positive result must be verified for legal acceptance. Presumptive positive samples require further confirmation.

Once a sample is suspected positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is used for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted at lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmed screening results are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS tests. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug usage over up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to cheat: Hair drug testing is difficult to manipulate, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical record: It outlines a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond just recent behavior.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5 to 7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is a misnomer, as the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
