Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in DeWitt, Georgia. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with testing centers available in cities nationwide capable of performing the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other specific requirements.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly moved toward using hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation commonly choose this method. The key advantage is a significantly longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, with secured collection, making it almost immune to tampering. Nevertheless, for detection of very recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of such substance use by locking biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate three-month window for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A sample cut to 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample amount for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing for a drug test result consists of four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial procedure of entering a sample into a lab's system. This involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any needed data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation for admissibility in legal contexts. Any samples with presumptive positivity in Screening require additional verification.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted at a significantly lower concentration compared to methodologies like urine or oral fluid, which is why hair drug screening is considered highly challenging.

Confirmation of positive results from screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reflects historical usage: This method illustrates a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs typically need 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis target is the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
