Accredited Drug Testing offers full-spectrum hair follicle drug analysis in Druid Hills, Georgia. When requiring a hair test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with testing facilities available in all major cities across the Nation equipped to administer hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are needed. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, the method involving hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence over others. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now prefer hair drug testing over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are employed by zero-tolerance employers, the judiciary, and for those on probation. They provide a significantly prolonged detection window of up to 90 days and are performed under observation, making them nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Using hair testing is recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol alongside other substances by ensnaring biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month time frame for drug and alcohol detection. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to adulterate, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of about 200 hair strands—or the size of a #2 pencil—taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to use a specimen of 150mg. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When indicating head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair denotes all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary steps involved in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This consists of confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be accepted in a legal setting. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Upon receiving a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is drawn from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning through to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Challenge to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is particularly difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It provides an overview of drug usage over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost considerations: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher expenses than other methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is actually on the hair strand, not the sub-scalp hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
