Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fort Benning, Georgia. Whether you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our team specializes in this area with testing centers available nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or other body hair can be utilized. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified options.

Recently, drug test methods have increasingly leaned towards hair follicle testing. This approach is now more popular among employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, who prefer it over traditional urine testing. With its zero-tolerance drug use policy, hair follicle testing is favored by many employers as well as courts and probation officers. Its main advantage is a much extended detection window, capable of identifying substance use for up to 90 days and it's nearly impossible to manipulate. Conversely, urine tests remain reliable for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a prolonged history of alcohol and drug presence, as biomarkers become embedded within the hair’s fibers during growth. Collected near the scalp, hair can usually signify drug and alcohol use spanning up to a 3-month period. It’s straightforward to gather, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 strands of hair (roughly #2 pencil thickness) closest to the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal quantity for initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a matching amount of body hair is an option. ‘Head hair’ specifically pertains to scalp hair only. In contrast, ‘body hair’ encompasses varied hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory processing of drug test outcomes encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of introducing a sample into the lab’s system. This step validates the secure sealing and proper shipment of the sample, issues a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any absent data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. While it cost-effectively identifies non-usage for most samples, any positive indication necessitates confirmation for legal purposes. Samples marked as presumptively positive during Screening necessitate an auxiliary confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted at a significantly lower concentration compared to other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging technique to execute.

Positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Any samples presumptively indicated as positive undergo washing as required before confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, in contrast to urine tests offering a shorter timeframe.
  • Cheating resilience: The difficulty in manipulating hair drug tests enhances result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical drug use: Capable of delineating a timeline of drug consumption, encompassing more than recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to pinpoint recent use: A delay of about 5-7 days exists before hair can reflect drug presence.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually evaluates the hair strand, excluding the scalp-level hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
