Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations throughout Fortson, Georgia. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing is unmatched, and we boast testing centers across all U.S. cities capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is adequate for testing. Hair tests analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized as per requirement.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing has leaned towards hair follicle tests more often. They are increasingly requested by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts instead of the traditional urine tests. Employers instituting strict no-drug-use policies, court-required tests, and probation terms frequently incorporate these tests. Their main advantage is a prolonged detection span of up to 90 days, utilizing a supervised collection and are very difficult to deceive. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the preferred method for identifying recent substance use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. By taking a sample from near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over a period of about three months. It's straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width), taken closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For advanced testing such as EtG, extended panels, or over 10-panel tests, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair isn't available, collecting the same quantity of body hair is an option. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The principal stages in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial phase where a sample is integrated into the lab’s system. This step involves verifying that the sample's packaging was intact and shipped appropriately, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any other data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for drug presence. While Screening efficiently rules out drug presence in many samples, legal admissibility requires confirmation of a positive result. Any samples with a presumptive positive from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required before confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analysis can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, whereas urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to alter, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks longer-term usage: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over a duration, rather than immediate consumption only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to register recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing forms.
  • Result variation: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can affect drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
