In Kinderlou, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis and hosts testing centers across all cities nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body hair are needed. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. Employers with strict drug-use policies, courts, and probationers often use hair follicle drug testing. The primary advantage is its prolonged detection window, up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that’s challenging to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can provide an extended timeline for detecting substances by locking biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When harvested near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for a time span of up to three months. This method is straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample approximately 1.5 inches long, consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation tests. For tests such as EtG, supplements, or those exceeding 10 panels, a larger sample of 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. In instances where scalp hair is insufficient, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair, whereas body hair pertains to other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The pivotal stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary step where a sample is registered into the lab’s database. It involves ensuring the sample remains sealed and is correctly transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any other data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial rapid assessment for identifying drugs of abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-effective means to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive finding necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, it then undergoes further confirmation.

Upon recording a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most intricate methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, any samples that test presumptively positive are cleansed as necessary. The entire lab sequence from Accessioning through Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair recognition and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can identify drug usage over a 90-day span, unlike urine tests, which cover shorter periods.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, yielding more precise results.
  • Yields historical insights: It depicts a timeline of drug use, covering an extended timeframe beyond mere recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify current use: Drugs become traceable in hair roughly 5-7 days following consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically cost more than other forms of drug testing.
  • Outcome variations: Hair color and individual hair growth disparities can influence the concentration levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the process actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
