Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle analysis services throughout Lizella, Georgia. Whether you require drug or alcohol hair screening, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to expert with locations in cities across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed to conduct a hair analysis, which can assess substance use, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, and tailor-made testing solutions.

Hair follicle testing has recently gained traction as a preferred method for drug screening. Organizations, court systems, and addiction specialists are increasingly opting for this method over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle analysis is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and probation services, owing to its extended detection window of up to 90 days, accuracy during observation, and its resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests maintain superiority for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a powerful method for identifying substance use, covering both drugs and alcohol. Hair serves as an extended chronicle of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When harvested near the scalp, hair can present up to nearly a three-month detection period for alcohol and drug presence. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to send.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch hair portion, approximately 200 strands (akin to a #2 pencil size) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those beyond 10 panels, it is advised to have 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" denotes solely scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process involved in determining drug test results encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where a sample is entered into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample has been properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial, swift detection for substance abuse. While economical for negating drug usage in most samples, a positive result from screening must be validated for court admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample return presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a substantially reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is conducted through techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed as needed before confirmation. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair credentials and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can trace drug use up to 90 days back, which exceeds the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, lending more accuracy to the results.
  • Displays usage history: It offers an overview of drug usage patterns over time rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally more costly compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand itself rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
