In North Decatur, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you need a drug or alcohol hair test, our experts specialize in hair testing, with locations in every city nationwide capable of conducting the test. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is typically required. Hair tests cater to various needs, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

The use of hair follicle drug tests for drug screening has grown in popularity in recent times. More employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and probationary individuals, rely on hair follicle tests. They offer a longer drug detection window, generally up to 90 days, are collected through direct observation, and are nearly impossible to deceive. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests are still the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands, hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drug intake. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will equate to 100mg of hair, optimal for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, or screens surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suitable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step involves checking that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data input not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for abuse drugs. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive indication requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that show presumptive positives in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the filled specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is verified under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days later, unlike urine tests which have a shorter window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: Offers a drug-use pattern over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In North Decatur, GA, hair follicle testing offers distinct benefits over traditional urine tests. Superior detection capability means hair tests can identify drug use patterns over an extended period, something urine tests often can't match. Their reliability is unmatched, providing a more accurate picture of an individual’s drug history.

While urine tests are suitable for immediate drug detection, hair tests offer a comprehensive view of usage over months, making them ideal for employers and legal entities. The maturity of the hair sample results in more consistent outcomes, bolstering trust in the testing method.

Extended Detection Window

In North Decatur, GA, the allure of hair follicle testing lies in its extended detection window. Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days back, it offers a substantial advantage for employers seeking to understand an applicant’s or employee's past substance use. This extensive timeframe provides a more thorough history compared to other testing methods.

Employers benefit from this prolonged detection period, as it informs better hiring decisions. The comprehensive data gathered allows for a more informed assessment of a candidate, giving businesses the full picture they need to enforce drug-free policies effectively.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in North Decatur, GA, is renowned for its tamper-resistant features. Unlike other methods, the risk of sample adulteration is significantly minimized. The hair collection process ensures that samples are collected authentically, reducing the possibility of altering test outcomes.

This method of testing offers reliable and unquestionable results, as it is almost impossible to cheat. The nature of hair samples resists external manipulation, solidifying their role in providing trustworthy data for employers and legal professionals.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
