Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in North Ogeechee, Georgia. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is supported by numerous testing centers located in cities across the nation, ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing needs.

In recent times, the method preferred for drug testing has increasingly been the hair follicle drug test. Many businesses, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists favor hair over urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are utilized by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under monitored conditions, and is nearly impossible to alter. Conversely, for identifying substance use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain highly precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to obtain, somewhat hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch segment, approximately 200 strands of hair (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, the optimum sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg amount is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not an option, a similar amount of body hair might be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair pertains to all other hair sorts (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary quick scan for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage in the majority of cases, a positive screen requires validation to be legally permissive. Any samples initially positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower levels compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex technique to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is very difficult, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
