Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug tests in Richwood, Georgia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair assessments and offers testing facilities in every city nationwide capable of conducting a hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. These hair evaluations can be processed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing options.

Over recent years, there has been a shift towards hair follicle drug testing as a common method. Numerous employers, the judicial system, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair drug screens instead of the conventional urine exams. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug regulations, courts, and those on probation employ hair follicle drug tests. The chief advantage lies in the extended detection span for drug consumption, typically up to 90 days. This method is observed during collection and is nearly unfeasible to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within a five-day timeframe, urine testing remains the precision standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. If collected near the scalp, hair delivers up to roughly a three-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. It's easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the perfect quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments surpassing 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable samount from other body parts can be used. By 'head hair', we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (like facial, axillary hair, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal steps within the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a sample into the lab’s records. This step covers verifying intact seal and proper shipping of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary line of defense against drug use. Despite its cost-efficiency for negating drug usage on most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be legally admissible. Presumptively positive Screening samples require secondary confirmation.

If a Screening sample turns presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the toughest to execute.

Positive screening confirmations employ GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS processes. All presumptive positives are washed before confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab procedure undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection time.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are very challenging to deceive, ensuring more reliability of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It chronicles a pattern of drug use across a timeframe, versus just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs are visible in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests cost more than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth might affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though frequently named "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually investigates the hair strand, not the under-scalp follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
