Located in Scotland, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Whether you require a drug or alcohol screening, our centers are equipped to conduct hair tests in cities across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from the head or body. With options to test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific needs, we cater to diverse requirements.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained preference for its efficacy in recent years. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests are now favored by employers, legal authorities, and rehabilitation experts for their stringent drug-free policies. These tests offer a superior detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection, and resistance to manipulation. However, for identifying recent drug use, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair, hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs. When gathered close to the scalp, it can yield up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and effortless to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising about 200 hair strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests that exceed 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in laboratory processing for a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial sample processing into a laboratory’s system. This procedure verifies proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. As a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), enhancing the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests trace drug use for up to 90 days, which surpasses the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally tough, enhancing the credibility of results.
  • Provides historical insight: The test can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently dubbed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Employing hair follicle testing in Scotland, GA presents substantial advantages over standard urine tests.
Significant benefits include:

  • Longer Detection Window: Hair tests detect substance use for up to 90 days, far longer than urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
