Located in Senoia, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in hair testing, with centers available nationwide for conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the scalp, or body hair may be used. These tests are designed to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other hair testing requirements.

Over recent years, the trend of utilizing hair follicle drug tests for drug detection has risen. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests rather than the standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug testing is favored by employers enforcing stringent anti-drug policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation. The key advantage is the extended detection duration for drug use, which lasts up to 90 days, is carried out under observation, and is very difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present a detection period of up to about 90 days for various substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches and approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the ideal amount for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, extra tests, and panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step covers ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not already supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for signs of drug abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective means to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be confirmed for it to be permissible in judicial settings. Samples that test positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair from the original specimen is extracted and prepped for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug testing is particularly complex.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long-term detection: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, increasing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It offers an overview of drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
