Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Omao, Hawaii. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with testing facilities available in all major cities across the country capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be utilized. Hair tests offer options for drug, alcohol/ETG analysis, or other tailored hair testing needs.

Over the years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the method of choice for drug screening. It is now favored by many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine testing. Employers with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and probationary programs often prefer hair drug testing. Its main advantage is a longer detection window of drug use, up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process that is extremely difficult to manipulate. However, for identifying recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still hold the advantage for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By entrapping biomarkers within the fiber structure of the hair growing strand, hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other substances. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it can offer an approximate 3-month detection range for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and uncomplicated to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advocated. It's advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is inaccessible, an equal quantity of body hair can be collected. In discussions about head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair only. Body hair references any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure in the laboratory for generating a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any missing data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening is the initial fast check for substances of abuse. Even though Screening offers a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result needs affirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that indicate a presumptive positive during Screening require secondary verification.

If a sample presents a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methodologies (such as urine or saliva), explaining why hair drug analysis is among the most challenging techniques to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive outcome in Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is monitored under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to falsify: It’s exceedingly tough to mislead a hair drug test, ensuring the results are more reliable.
  • Gives historical insights: It can reveal usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair coloration and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the actual test evaluates the hair strand, not the underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
