Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Heyburn, Idaho. Whether you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in such tests and have facilities nationwide for hair testing. Generally, hair of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body can be used. Hair examinations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other specific testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular in recent years. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over the usual urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation cases commonly employ hair tests. A significant advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under direct supervision, making cheating nearly impossible. Nonetheless, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a potent means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal nearly a 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising about 200 hair strands (roughly the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. In cases involving EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result incorporates four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's initial integration into the lab's system. This stage involves verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid evaluation for drug abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, any positive screen must be validated when required for court presentation. Samples that yield presumptive positive results in Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are thoroughly washed prior to Confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Overcoming a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus enhancing result precision.
  • Provides usage history: It provides a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become apparent in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
