Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Burr Ridge, Illinois. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we are specialists in hair testing with centers located in every city across the United States, ready to conduct a hair test. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other personalized testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now mandate hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation individuals commonly utilize hair follicle drug tests. This testing method's key advantage is its extended detection window for drug use, usually up to 90 days, collected in a monitored process, making it hard to tamper. Nevertheless, for drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Using hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section, approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, will provide about 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is insufficient, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. Note that head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process involves checking the sample’s packaging and shipping integrity, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Presumptive positives from Screening require further confirmation.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at substantially lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptively positive samples undergo a pre-confirmation wash as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair qualification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides use history: It can outline a drug use pattern over a timeframe rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth characteristics can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outshine urine testing in Burr Ridge, IL? The reasons are clear: hair testing offers unmatched accuracy and reliability. While traditional urine tests provide a narrow detection window, hair tests reveal substance use over a prolonged period, often up to 90 days. This extended timeframe provides a more comprehensive view of substance habits, making hair follicle tests superior for both employers and legal entities requiring in-depth analyses.

Compared to urine tests, which are more susceptible to manipulation, hair testing methods present a robust alternative that records long-term substance use, rather than just recent consumption. This makes hair follicle testing a trusted option for employers in Burr Ridge who maintain stringent drug policies, ensuring consistency and integrity in workplace safety measures.

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout advantages of hair follicle testing in Burr Ridge, IL, is its extended detection window. Unlike tests limited to recent use moments, hair follicle tests capture a detailed history of substance use up to 90 days. This capability provides employers with an expansive understanding of an individual's substance use over time, essential for making informed hiring or retention decisions.

Such a lengthy detection period enables organizations to assess not just the current status but the ongoing habits of potential candidates or existing employees. This comprehensive insight is invaluable for maintaining a safe and compliant workplace environment, where the predictive analysis of substance use trends is critical for operational integrity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Burr Ridge, IL, the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests provides significant peace of mind. Unlike urine tests, which might be altered or diluted, hair samples are almost impossible to adulterate. This ensures the authenticity and reliability of the results, making it a preferred choice among employers and judicial entities where unwavering accuracy is essential.

The hair follicle testing process involves a straightforward, supervised collection process that minimizes any potential for manipulation. By ensuring the sample's integrity from collection to analysis, the method serves as a robust deterrent against fraudulent attempts, thereby guaranteeing that the data derived is both credible and verifiable.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
