In Earlville, IL, Accredited Drug Testing is your source for comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. For hair drug or alcohol analysis, we're experts in this field, boasting testing locations in every city across the nation, ready to conduct your hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2-inch hair from your head's crown or body is required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to meet specific testing needs.

In recent times, the hair follicle drug test method has become increasingly favored. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer it over the conventional urine test. Those with zero-tolerance policies, such as employers, courts, and probation programs, utilize hair follicle tests. A significant advantage of such a test is its extended drug use detection period—up to 90 days, with supervised collection, making it almost tamper-proof. Yet, for checking recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain the most precise.

* You must register by phone or online to receive your donor pass/registration prior to proceeding to the testing center. You must bring a valid government issued ID along with the registration/barcode number which was sent to you by email.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now widely considered an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair serves as a historical record for both alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. Hair collected near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol use for about three months. It's easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or more than 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. 'Head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing process in a laboratory consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is first processed into the laboratory's system. This procedure involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, quick check for commonly abused drugs. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive result must be confirmed to be valid in legal proceedings. Any sample with a presumptive positive result in Screening requires a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug tests one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Every presumptive positive sample is washed prior to Confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are tough to cheat, making results more reliable.
  • Chronological data: They provide insight into drug usage patterns over time, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Costs: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called “hair follicle tests”, this test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.
