In East Gillespie, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we're experts, with facilities across the country ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances as needed.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method of screening. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now require them instead of standard urine tests. Companies with zero-drug-tolerance policies, along with judicial systems and probation conditions, prefer this test. Its main advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, completed through an observed collection process, reducing the chance of tampering. For recent substance use, however, urine tests remain most precise within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the growing strands. When collected near the scalp, hair samples can reveal detection of substances for a period reaching up to three months. Additionally, collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides around 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or when testing over 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for accurate weighing. If scalp hair is not an option, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. When we say head hair, it strictly means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory procedure consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step in which the sample is processed into the lab’s system. This involves confirming the sample’s seal and safe shipment, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any data entry supplementary to the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient manner to exclude drug presence in most cases, any positive result requires confirmation to be permissible in legal settings. Samples testing positive during Screening must undergo further verification.

Should the Screening identify a sample as positive, additional hair is taken from the primary specimen to prepare for Extraction. At this phase, drug extraction from hair occurs at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is notably complex.

Confirmation follows any initial positive with tests like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples indicated as positive are cleansed before confirmation wherever necessary. Every stage, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and acknowledged through ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug consumption up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection span.
  • Complexity in deceit: Tampering with a hair drug test is particularly challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers usage history: It shows a timeline of drug consumption over time, not just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to detect recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Results can be influenced by hair color and individual growth rates affecting drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair testing advantages over urine: In East Gillespie, IL, hair follicle testing is superior to urine tests, particularly in its detection accuracy and reliability. Hair testing ensures a longer detection period, providing a more comprehensive history of drug use than urine tests, which are limited to a shorter timespan. Thus, employers and authorities prefer hair testing for more robust and definitive substance use verification.

Extended Detection Window

Extended detection window: One of the primary benefits of hair follicle testing in East Gillespie, IL is its ability to trace drug use up to 90 days prior. This prolonged detection window grants employers a better understanding of an individual's long-term substance use. Such comprehensive insights aid in making informed decisions regarding employment or participation in programs.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests reduce the risk of sample adulteration in East Gillespie, IL. These tests are inherently tamper-resistant, making them a top choice for ensuring credible results. Unlike some testing methods prone to manipulation, hair tests preserve the integrity of the sample, offering trustworthy outcomes with minimal chances of interference or sample contamination.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
