Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Essex, Illinois. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to expert in hair analysis, with facilities across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other specialized hair testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been incorporated as a standard evaluation method. Numerous employers, judiciary entities, and Substance Abuse specialists now opt for hair drug evaluations instead of conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation frequently employ hair follicle tests. A major advantage is their prolonged detection window, covering up to 90 days, and the observed collection process makes tampering nearly impossible. Yet, for detecting recent substance use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

As a potent instrument for identifying drug and alcohol usage, hair testing has become increasingly recognized. Hair contains a prolonged historical record of alcohol and other substances by enclosing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When harvested close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeline of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A specimen of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (equivalent to the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a quantity of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. In cases where scalp hair is not obtainable, a proportional amount of body hair can be collected. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal phases in the lab processing of drug testing outcomes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning phase involves the initial induction of a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data inputs not covered through an electronic chain of custody approach.

The Screening stage consists of a swift preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient strategy for dismissing drug consumption in the majority of samples, any positive screen must undergo confirmation to hold up in legal settings. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate an ensuing confirmation process.

When a sample registers as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is collected from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are drawn out from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than those found in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug testing is notably the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmatory tests for any positive screening outcomes employ techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with tentative positives undergo a washing process prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of detecting drug use up to ninety days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to falsification: Deceiving a hair drug test is exceptionally hard, thus enhancing result precision.
  • Historical insight: It provides insights into drug usage patterns over prolonged durations, beyond merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests carry higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Differences such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing surpass traditional urine examinations in Essex, IL? Primarily, hair tests present a longer detection timeline, offering a more comprehensive substance use history. Unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection window, hair testing maintains its accuracy up to 90 days, making it a superior choice for long-term substance assessment and providing peace of mind with its enhanced reliability.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Essex, IL, extends its detection timeframe, capturing drug use over an extended period, typically up to 90 days. This extensive window allows employers an in-depth view of an individual's substance use history. Such a comprehensive approach is crucial for meticulous evaluations, offering insights far beyond the limitations of shorter-duration tests, thus ensuring informed and responsible decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
