Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Highland Park, Illinois. For hair drug or alcohol screening, visit our nationwide centers, including those in Highland Park. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair suffice for testing. Hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. With zero-tolerance policies, employers, courts, and probationers benefit from hair tests' extended detection, lasting up to 90 days. This nearly foolproof process is observed and reliable, though urine tests excel for recent (within 5 days) use.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When acquired near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection period for both alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of nearly 200 hair strands (resembling the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. The term body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for substance misuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to discount substance use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admission. Any Screening results suggesting substance presence necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample suggests substance presence in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. Here, substances are taken from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex method.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is highly challenging to tamper with a hair drug evaluation, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a substance use pattern over time, not limited to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It takes approximately 5-7 days for substances to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually costlier than other substance testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of substance metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Highland Park, IL, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests by offering deeper insights into drug use histories. This method excels in accuracy, detecting substances with more reliability than traditional urine analyses. Employers and other stakeholders prefer this advanced testing to ensure stringent health and safety standards due to its superior performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
