Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Irvington, Illinois. If a drug or alcohol hair test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in conducting hair tests and offers testing facilities in every major city across America. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair testing can analyze substances, alcohol/ETG, or include other tailored testing options.

In the past few years, drug testing methods have shifted towards hair follicle tests. Companies, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with no-drug policies, judicial entities, and probationary programs increasingly rely on hair follicle assessments for their distinct advantage. The test is effective due to its 90-day drug use detection window, observed collection, and resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain optimal for detecting substance use within the prior 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When taken close to the scalp, it can offer around a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and various drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, consisting of approximately 200 strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other hair types like facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The lab process for drug test results contains four main procedures: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and sent, designating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary examination for abused drugs. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive screen result needs confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require secondary verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing poses the most challenges.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples that test presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect usage over a shorter span.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: It reveals drug usage patterns over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Even though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Choosing hair follicle testing over urine testing in Irvington, IL reveals clear advantages. While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair testing offers enhanced accuracy over extended periods.

This method excels with its reliability, reducing chances for false negatives. Employers who prioritize comprehensive screening favor hair tests for their broader detection timeframe and heightened accuracy.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Irvington, IL extends the detection window significantly, identifying substance use up to 90 days prior. This extended timeframe gives employers a thorough look into an individual’s drug history.

Such a comprehensive view helps employers make informed decisions about an employee’s or candidate’s substance habits. This testing method enhances workplace safety and decision-making processes efficiently.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
