In Manteno, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol, we focus on hair analysis, supported by our nationwide network of testing centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair tests can screen for various substances, providing tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained traction in drug testing methods. This type of testing is now a preference for many employers, the judiciary, and substance abuse professionals, replacing traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, legal authorities, and probationers favor hair tests for their extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days. Indeed, while hair tests are rigorous, urine tests remain accurate for recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have gained recognition as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. The hair encapsulates long-term alcohol and drug history by embedding biomarkers within its growing strand fibers. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug usage for up to a roughly 3-month period. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG analysis, supplementary tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a specimen quantity of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves confirming correct sample sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling any additional data gaps not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Despite Screening being a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug presence in most samples, court-admissible results require confirmation of positive screens. Any samples with a tentatively positive result in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of positive screen outcomes is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive findings undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the lab's entire process is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to manipulation: It is very difficult to subvert a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can show a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than only recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to indicate recent intake: Drugs become traceable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are typically pricier than alternate testing methods.
  • Result variances: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Manteno, IL, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests by offering extended detection periods and robust reliability. Hair testing uncovers substance use history up to 90 days prior, providing an edge over the short detection span of urine tests. This longer detection timeframe ensures a thorough evaluation of an individual's substance use, aligning with rigorous zero-tolerance policies.

  • Longer Detection Period: Hair tests analyze drug usage over months, providing a detailed overview, unlike urine tests that detect recent usage only. Employers benefit from this comprehensive insight, enhancing trust and workplace safety.
  • Accuracy and Integrity: Hair sample collection involves minimal risk of tampering, bolstering trust in test outcomes. This level of reliability solidifies the choice of hair tests over traditional urine analysis.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Manteno, IL gain valuable insight into an individual's drug use with hair follicle testing. An unmatched detection window of up to 90 days offers a detailed retrospective view of an employee's substance history. This aspect translates to a more informed hiring process, as well as a deeper understanding of an individual's drug use trends over an extended period.

  • Comprehensive Overview: By spanning months rather than days, hair tests provide insight into consistent or sporadic usage patterns. For employers, this information is crucial in crafting effective workplace policies and ensuring adherence to drug-free environments.
  • Enhanced Screening: The 90-day analysis period is especially beneficial for sectors requiring stringent safety and reliability standards, offering confidence in personnel evaluation processes.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Manteno, IL, the robustness of hair follicle testing ensures tamper-resistant samples, reducing the risk of adulteration. Hair testing involves an observed collection process, minimizing opportunities to alter or fake samples, thus generating authentic and unquestionable results.

  • Secure Process: The collection method deters manipulation attempts, fostering confidence in the results. Even with external pressure to alter outcomes, the integrity of the testing process remains intact.
  • High Reliability: Hair tests eliminate many common tampering tactics associated with other specimen types, such as substituting samples. This reliability cements hair follicle testing as a primary choice for precise drug testing enforcement.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
