Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive drug and alcohol hair follicle testing in Oakwood, Illinois. Specializing in hair analysis, we have centers nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Our hair tests analyze substances like drugs and alcohol, along with other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more common method for drug detection. Many organizations, including employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation services, prefer this over traditional urine tests. Hair tests have the advantage of a longer detection period, up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that is hard to falsify. However, urine tests are still the most effective for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a highly effective method for identifying substance use involving drugs and alcohol. The hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering a retrospective timeline of these substances over several months. When clipped near the roots, hair can indicate alcohol and other drug usage over a period of about three months. Hair samples are straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A segment of hair, measuring 1.5 inches and comprising about 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil in size), will yield 100mg, which is considered optimal for both screening and validating results. For comprehensive testing like EtG, additional panels beyond 10, 150mg of the sample should be collected. Using a jeweler’s scale is advisable for precise weighing. In cases where scalp hair is not available, equivalent amounts of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process involves four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial integration into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample's sealed and safe shipping, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drug presence. It serves as an economical approach to detect drug use in most samples, though any positive findings require confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples showing potential drug presence in Screening need further verification through secondary testing.

A sample that tests presumptively positive during Screening leads to extracting additional hair from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Here, the process isolates drugs at lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid tests, which explains the complexity of hair drug testing.

Subsequent Confirmation of any positive screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Necessary washing of the samples occurs before confirmation of presumptive positives. Adherence to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards is maintained throughout the lab's processes from Accessioning to Confirmation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair testing can trace drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • High resistance to tampering: The difficulty in altering hair test results enhances accuracy.
  • Historical use patterns: It reveals patterns of drug consumption over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become apparent in hair samples.
  • Higher cost: The expense of hair drug testing surpasses other testing methodologies.
  • Result variance: Factors such as hair pigmentation and personal growth rates can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", this test assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Oakwood, IL, hair follicle testing is proving to be more effective than traditional urine tests. Offering greater detection accuracy and reliability, hair tests uncover substance use patterns over a longer duration, giving employers and courts the credible insights they require to make informed decisions compared to the limited window provided by urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Unlike other methods, hair follicle testing in Oakwood, IL, provides an extended detection window of up to 90 days. This gives employers a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance history, ensuring transparency and a better understanding of their habits. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
