Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Preston Heights, Illinois. If you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis with centers across the Nation, including all cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair can be used for testing. Hair assessments can scrutinize for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailor-made testing choices.

Over recent years, drug testing practices have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug examinations. Numerous employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for a hair drug test over a conventional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests cater to employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation individuals. A significant advantage of hair follicle tests is their extensive drug use detection window, typically up to 90 days, with samples collected under observation, making it hard to tamper with. Still, urine tests remain most accurate for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a long-term record of substances by trapping biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. Samples taken near the scalp can provide a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmatory tests. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferred. We suggest weighing the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. The term 'head hair' refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' encompasses all other forms (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Summary

The laboratory process for drug test results includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of incorporating a sample into the lab's system. This step involves checking that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to primarily rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be acceptable in legal settings. Any samples testing presumptively positive at the Screening stage require additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other matrices (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair testing the most challenging methodology.

Positive Screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Every presumptive positive sample is rinsed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, as opposed to the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly unlikely, thus delivering more accurate outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: It allows insight into drug use trends over time, not just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite commonly being termed "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand itself, rather than the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Preston Heights, IL, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests significantly. Offering superior detection accuracy, hair tests provide detailed insights into an individual's long-term drug use history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
