Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Round Lake, Illinois. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialization in hair testing and nationwide testing centers, including all cities, ensures your needs are met. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head or body for testing. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other customized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common as a method for drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The main advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, combined with a monitored collection process, rendering it nearly foolproof. Conversely, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has emerged as an influential method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended history of alcohol and other substances by enclosing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of approximately three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG testing, add-ons, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair might be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial introduction of a sample into a laboratory's system, including verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening entails a preliminary swift examination for drugs of misuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, further hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Information on historical use: Hair tests can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Round Lake, IL, hair follicle testing is superior to traditional urine tests. Hair testing offers remarkable detection accuracy and reliability, providing insights into an individual's drug use over an extended period. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
