In Sun River Terrace, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If you're seeking drug or alcohol analysis via hair, our expertise and nationwide centers make it simple. While most cases require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, the preference for hair follicle drug testing has grown, substituting standard urine tests for many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation programs rely on hair follicle tests for their extended 90-day drug use detection, which is nearly cheat-proof. For recent 5-day screenings, urine tests still provide the most accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for detecting substance use involving drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as hair grows. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can present a detection timeline of approximately 3 months for substances including alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

An ideal specimen for testing comprises a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, resulting in 100mg of hair. For EtG tests, additional parameters, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the sample. When scalp hair is unavailable, the same quantity of body hair may suffice. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. In contrast, body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory system. This involves ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial fast assessment for potential substance abuse. While Screening is an economical method for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation for court validity. Presumptively positive samples from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In the case of a presumptively positive result during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. Here, drug compounds are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations relative to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most complex methodologies.

Positive screening confirmations are carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples deemed presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing discovers drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test poses significant difficulty, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical consumption pattern: It unveils a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent consumption detection: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately within 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
