Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Victoria, Illinois. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, we specialize in hair testing with facilities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for testing. These tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific hair testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly prevalent. Many employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer a hair drug test over a standard urine test. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation often use these tests. The main advantage is a longer detection period, up to 90 days, ensuring it's nearly impossible to manipulate, though urine tests remain best for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft in growth. When procured near the scalp, hair can provide a detection range of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, fairly hard to alter, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal specimen for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a similar amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean just scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s protocol. This covers verifying correct sample sealing and shipping, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing further data entry lacking in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in the bulk of samples, but a positive screen must be validated for legal admissibility. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a specimen tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Verification of any positive screen is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any presumed positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, if required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug assays can detect drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests present a shorter detection range.
  • Challenging to evade: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely hard, enhancing result reliability.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It can demonstrate a timeline of drug use over a duration, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to be discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Factors such as hair pigment and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Victoria, IL, hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine testing. Comprehensive Detection over an extended period makes hair tests reliable, offering superior accuracy. Urine tests, while common, don't match hair testing's precision and reliability, especially for prolonged observation periods. Employers and courts find the hair method trustworthy and effective for a stringent substance use policy.

Extended Detection Window

In Victoria, IL, hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window of up to 90 days. This capability offers employers a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance use history. For those concerned with understanding habitual patterns rather than sporadic use, hair tests exemplify a thorough examination beyond what standard tests can achieve.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Victoria, IL, stands out for its tamper-resistant properties. By significantly reducing the risk of sample adulteration, this method delivers unquestionable results. For those seeking dependability, hair testing's resistance to common manipulation techniques ensures the integrity of results, promoting honest analysis throughout the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
