Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Westville, Illinois. If you require a hair or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing and have facilities nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol, and offer other customized testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a popular method for drug testing. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists prefer it to urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers due to the longer detection period of up to 90 days, done under observation, making it hard to tamper with. For detecting recent drug use, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 90-day window for detecting alcohol and drugs. It's easy to gather hair samples, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp should yield 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the hair sample. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. By “head hair,” we mean only the hair on the scalp, while “body hair” pertains to all other body hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory processing includes four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with the sample's initial registration in the laboratory system. This phase verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes extra data entry not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a quick preliminary check for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to discount drug use in most cases, a positive screening outcome needs verification for legal validity. Samples that screen presumptively positive necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at concentrations lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing presents the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation for positive Screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use over 90 days, whereas urine tests provide a shorter detection timeframe.
  • High resistance to tampering: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more accurate results.
  • Reflects pattern over time: It shows a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent behavior.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strands and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
