Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle substance testing in Willow Hill, Illinois. Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, offering drug and alcohol screening services at numerous facilities throughout the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown or the body for testing. These tests evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other bespoke options.

Recently, the approach to drug testing increasingly embraces hair follicle screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors often prefer hair drug assessments over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation services favor hair follicle tests for their extensive detection timeframe, which spans up to 90 days, ensuring accuracy and resistance to manipulation. However, urine testing remains optimal for recent consumption, within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Through capturing biomarkers within the fibers of hair strands, hair reveals a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer around a three-month detection span for substances. Hair is easy to gather, tough to alter, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for both initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If there’s no scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair should be acquired. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample within the lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carries out any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary fast check for drug abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, any positive screen needs verification to be considered legally valid. Samples testing presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent validation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of positive screening results is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is considerably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: It reveals patterns of drug intake over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to be pricier compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Willow Hill, IL, hair follicle testing gains a competitive edge over urine tests due to its superior accuracy and reliability. Hair testing's extensive detection window provides a thorough outlook on substance use, making it a more dependable choice for employers aiming to maintain a drug-free environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
