Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug screening services in Wilton Center, Illinois. If a hair drug or alcohol exam is required, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair assessments, with facilities in multiple cities nationwide that can execute a hair exam. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head’s crown or body can be used for analysis. Hair examinations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair testing variations.

Lately, drug testing procedures increasingly incorporate hair follicle drug testing. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug assessments over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests serve employers with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and probationary individuals. The significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug use detection window, reaching up to 90 days, secured through observation, and difficult to falsify. Although, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for evaluation and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a specimen quantity of 150mg is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. We specifically mean scalp hair when mentioning head hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair sources (such as facial and axillary).

Process Outline

The core steps in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the introductory phase of integrating a sample into a lab's framework. This step includes confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive result mandates verification to be court-admissible. Samples with a presumptively positive screen require an additional confirmation.

If a sample is indicated as positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair in much lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

To verify any positive screening, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is employed. All presumptively positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation as required. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is highly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Supplies historical insights: It enables observation of drug use patterns over a timeframe, not merely recent instances.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become noticeable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and unique growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over urine analysis in Wilton Center, IL? The benefits are notable. Hair testing encompasses a broader detection range, capturing drug use over extended durations. In comparison, urine tests offer a narrower window. Hair tests furnish a more comprehensive examination of an individual's drug history, boasting higher accuracy and reliability than traditional urine tests.

Hair testing's precision in uncovering substance use lends a distinct advantage for employers enforcing drug-free policies. Additionally, the likelihood of tampering with samples is significantly lower in hair testing. Hence, whereas urine tests meet immediate past-use detection, hair testing excels in providing a detailed picture of long-term substance exposure.

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout features of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window. In Wilton Center, IL, using this method allows employers to gain insights into an individual's substance use history for up to 90 days. This extended timeframe provides a broader understanding of long-term behavior rather than just recent activities, making it invaluable for comprehensive assessments.

This prolonged period of detection is particularly beneficial for employers aiming to uphold drug-free policies. It offers a thorough view of an applicant or employee’s long-term substance use, allowing more informed decision-making. The ability to detect past drug use effectively reduces the risk of recurrence, enhancing workplace safety and security.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing is renowned for being a tamper-resistant method. In Wilton Center, IL, this testing approach minimizes the risk of sample adulteration. Since the sample collection process is observed and hair samples are not easily alterable, the results obtained are reliable and trustworthy, providing employers with peace of mind regarding the validity of the test outcomes.

This method's robustness against tampering is a primary reason many employers and legal systems opt for hair follicle tests. By reducing the potential for test manipulation, organizations can confidently rely on the results to enforce policies and make informed decisions regarding their workforce, ensuring the integrity of the testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
