Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Winnebago, Illinois. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol tests, our proficiency lies in hair assessments, with locations across the nation ready to serve. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. These tests analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized further.

Recently, the adoption of hair follicle testing for drugs has surged. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over the traditional urine method. Employers with strict no-drug use policies, courts, and individuals on probation opt for these tests. Hair follicle testing's advantage is its 90-day drug detection period, with observed collections making them hard to tamper with, though urine tests still reign in detecting very recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug intake through the entrapment of biomarkers within the growth of the hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is an optimal amount for both testing and verification. For EtG, supplements, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other varieties of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory assessment of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This process encompasses confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid evaluation for drug usage. Although Screening provides an economical approach to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result must be authenticated to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a concentration lower than that in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug analysis the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directive and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can trace drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine testing which offers a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is quite challenging to bypass a hair drug test, ensuring the results are more dependable.
  • Delivers usage pattern: It can present a record of drug consumption over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to be detected in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally involves higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis concerns the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
