Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair drug testing services in Andrews, Indiana. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing with testing centers across cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or other body parts may be used. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other specialized hair testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly utilized for drug detection. Many employers, legal entities, and addiction specialists prefer hair tests over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are favored by companies with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers. The key advantage of hair testing is a longer detection window, usually up to 90 days, making it difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine testing remains the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical account of substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shafts. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an approximately three-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly comparable to a #2 pencil in size) adjacent to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample amount for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be taken. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test result involve four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This process confirms that the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid examination for commonly abused drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to hold up in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to implement.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, resulting in more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over a longer duration, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires around 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to drug testing in Andrews, IN, hair follicle testing is superior to urine tests. The benefits of hair testing include greater accuracy and reliability, detecting long-term substance use effectively. Hair tests reveal a broader history of drug use, unlike urine tests that focus on recent consumption. This extended detection period ensures that employers make informed decisions based on thorough insights rather than immediate past usage.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Andrews, IN offers a significant advantage with its extended detection window, which can trace drug use up to 90 days back. This comprehensive view allows employers to assess an individual's substance history over a longer period, thus making more informed hiring choices. Such an extended lookout provides an accurate assessment of habitual drug usage patterns, offering clarity absent in other testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The robustness of hair follicle testing in Andrews, IN lies in its tamper-resistant nature. This testing method greatly minimizes the risk of sample adulteration, ensuring trustworthy and indisputable results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
