Located throughout the United States, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing, including in Ashley, Indiana. Our specialty lies in both hair drug and alcohol testing. With centers available in every major city, we provide a reliable service for your testing needs. The ideal hair sample consists of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and tailored testing solutions.

In recent trends, hair follicle testing has become a favored method for drug detection. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are now opting for hair tests over traditional urine testing. Designed for zero-tolerance policies, these tests serve employers, courts, and probation officers. Hair follicle tests offer an extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, include supervised collection, and are virtually tamper-proof. However, for identifying recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests are still the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term alcohol and drug history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strands. Collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for testing. For EtG, additional tests, and those above 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the hair. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it's specifically scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a drug test result at the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample's sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an affordable approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptively positive samples during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

Upon a presumptively positive Screening result, more hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at a much lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more credible results.
  • Offers historical insights: Displays drug use patterns over a longer period, rather than recent usage only.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Though called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Ashley, IN: Hair follicle testing holds a significant edge over traditional urine testing due to its superior detection capabilities and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which can be limited by temporary circumstances, hair tests provide an extensive detection window and robust resistance to tampering, establishing them as highly reliable for identifying long-term drug use patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
