Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Birdseye, Indiana. If you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we are experts in this field, with centers all across the nation capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer various customized testing options.

In recent years, the growing trend in drug testing has embraced hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors now opt for hair over standard urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationary individuals find hair testing advantageous due to its extended detection period, lasting up to 90 days. It's conducted under supervision, making it nearly uncheatable. Nonetheless, for drug use detected in the last 5 days, the urine test remains unsurpassed.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-term markers of alcohol and drugs by embedding them in the strands of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of about three months for alcohol and other substances. The collection of hair samples is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch cut of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for basic screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings over 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. We advise measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample’s initial integration into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data required that’s not available via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary scan for drugs of abuse. While it offers a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be further verified to be used in legal proceedings. Any samples testing presumptive positive during Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, more hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation for a positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter range.
  • Resistance to falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: Hair tests can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to register in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can impact the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Though frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
