Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cambria, Indiana. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited is adept in hair testing and has facilities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas is needed for testing. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol, or be tailored to specific requirements.

In recent years, there's been a shift towards hair follicle drug testing for more frequent screenings. Many workplaces, judicial bodies, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. This method is favored by zero-tolerance employers, judiciary, and probation systems. The main advantage is its extended detection window—up to 90 days—offering an observed and secure collection process, making it difficult to tamper with. However, for usage within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the top choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This method offers an extended timeframe of detection by capturing biomarkers within the hair structure. Hair collected from near the scalp can reveal substance use for up to about three months. Additionally, hair is easy to collect, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately as thick as a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is an optimal amount for both screening and verification processes. For EtG, additional substances, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's best to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. In case scalp hair cannot be sourced, an equal volume of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (face, underarms, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key phases in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Verification.

Accessioning entails the starting phase of incorporating a sample into a lab’s system. This involves checking sample seals and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening incorporates an initial rapid assessment for abuse substances. While Screening is cost-efficient in excluding drug presence in most samples, a positive result must be validated for legal considerations. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening undergo secondary verification.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, more hair is obtained from the initial sample and set for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from the hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug evaluation quite complex.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo a washing process prior to verification if necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Verification adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can recognize substance use up to 90 days, whereas urine analyses have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to deceive: It's highly challenging to outsmart a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insight: It can illustrate a drug usage trend over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: There is a 5-7 day delay before drugs can be identified in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than alternative drug detection methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences may impact the levels of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Although often termed “hair follicle tests”, the analysis targets the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing has become the preferred method over traditional urine testing in Cambria, IN due to its superior detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, hair testing provides a broader detection window and is less susceptible to manipulation. Employers and professionals seek hair tests for their reliability, ensuring a higher level of accuracy in detecting long-term drug usage.

Extended Detection Window

In Cambria, IN, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing is invaluable. Capable of identifying drug usage up to 90 days prior, these tests offer a thorough review of an individual’s past substance use. Employers gain a more complete understanding of an applicant or employee's history, allowing for informed decision-making in their hiring or monitoring processes.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The reliable nature of hair follicle testing in Cambria, IN reduces the risk of tampering, offering clear and indisputable results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
