Accredited Drug Testing provides hair follicle drug tests in Cornettsville, Indiana, with expertise in hair drug and alcohol screening, and testing centers available in cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is required for testing. Hair follicle tests can detect drugs and alcohol/ETG and offer other specialized options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent in recent years, preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance policies, court orders, and probation cases, hair tests offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days and are collected under observation, making them nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now viewed as an effective method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term history of substances by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch snip comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair variations (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s framework. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to negate drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be substantiated to be valid in legal contexts. Any specimens preliminarily positive in Screening mandate a subsequent confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are separated from hair at a considerably reduced concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is executed by means of GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug evaluations can reveal substance use for up to 90 days, opposed to urine tests, which possess a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug examination is notably challenging, enhancing the precision of results.
  • Illustrates historical usage: It allows for the observation of a drug use pattern over a duration, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Ineffective for recent use detection: It typically requires 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are usually more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result inconsistencies: Elements such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Cornettsville, IN, hair follicle testing stands out for several reasons. It surpasses traditional urine testing with a longer detection window, observing substance use patterns over up to 90 days. This extensive period gives a broader view of a user's history compared to urine, which generally detects only recent use. Hair testing’s accuracy is unparalleled, as it's less susceptible to tampering, unlike urine samples.

The reliability of hair tests is due to their resistance to common circumvention methods found in urine tests. Being nearly impossible to alter, hair follicle testing offers employers the assurance of genuine results, ensuring the adherence to a safe, drug-free environment.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Cornettsville, IN excels with an extended detection window, allowing for drug use analysis up to 90 days prior. This far surpasses other methods, making it ideal for comprehensive substance history assessments. Employers benefit by gaining insights beyond immediate usage, helping in making informed hiring decisions and maintaining a safe workplace.

With such a broad detection period, hair testing grants an in-depth understanding of an individual’s substance use habits, ensuring an accurate reflection of their lifestyle choices. This insight can effectively aid employers in enforcing drug-free workplace policies over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
