Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Hebron, Indiana. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our firm is proficient in hair testing, available in centers across all American cities. Testing requires 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair. These tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing forms.

The trend for drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle tests lately. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over urine tests. Such tests appeal to employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. Hair tests are favored for their extended drug use detection period, reaching up to 90 days, through supervised collection, making it hard to deceive. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the hair's developing fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can present a detection window of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample for examination and validation. For EtG, additional components, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When referring to head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes any other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This encompasses ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial rapid inspection for drug abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient in disproving drug usage in most samples, a screen indicating positivity requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate secondary verification.

If a sample emerges as presumptively positive in the Screening step, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for preparation in Extraction. During this process, substances are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS are employed for verifying any positive screening result. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can uncover drug usage up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to deceive: It is quite arduous to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal disparities in hair growth can impact the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Important: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the scalp-underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
