Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Kasson, Indiana. For those needing hair-based evaluations, we are experts in this field, with testing centers nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. These tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for various other substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug assessments have become a more frequent method. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now often require this instead of traditional urine tests. Hair tests support zero-tolerance policies and are used by the legal system and those on probation. Their advantage is a detection window of up to 90 days, with supervised sample collection, making them hard to tamper with. Urine tests remain reliable for recent use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to about three months for alcohol and drug identification. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp produces 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or examinations exceeding ten panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four crucial stages in the lab analysis of a drug screening outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample within a facility's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and conveyed correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid analysis for drug abuse signs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Samples that show provisional positives during Screening mandate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample returns a provisional positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a much diminished concentration than in alternate techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug analysis is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening results occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All provisional positive samples undergo a cleansing before confirmation if necessary. The whole lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection duration.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can provide a trend of drug consumption over a prolonged period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: Detecting drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug screening methods.
  • Result disparities: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair development can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Kasson, IN, centers around its superior detection accuracy. Hair testing offers a more comprehensive and reliable evaluation compared to traditional urine tests. The method identifies drug use across a larger time span, providing more insightful results.

Traditional urine tests have limitations due to their shorter detection periods. Hair follicle tests surpass these tests due to their consistency and reliability in results, essential for industries demanding thorough substance use evaluations.

Extended Detection Window

With an extended detection window, hair follicle testing in Kasson, IN, captures drug use patterns over a long period, typically up to 90 days. This allows employers to gain a better understanding of an individual's history with substances.

Employers benefit greatly from the panoramic view provided by hair tests, observing potential or continued substance usage. The 90-day window ensures employers can assess an applicant or employee's full history, ensuring an informed decision-making process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
