Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Onward, Indiana. When you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers across all Nationwide cities prepared to handle such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body suffice. Hair samples can be checked for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing processes more frequently include hair follicle exams. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair drug tests over standard urine analyses. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation supervisors. Their main advantage lies in a detection period of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The approach of hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. As hair grows, it traps biomarkers that provide a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can yield a detection period of up to approximately three months for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) located closest to the scalp will produce 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or analyses over 10 panels, a larger sample of 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair might be collected. In the context of head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in processing a lab drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the initial processing of the sample into the lab’s system. This stage ensures proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) randomly, and fulfills any additional data input that an electronic chain of custody might not cover.

Screening performs an early evaluation for any signs of substance abuse. Although cost-effective for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screening needs further confirmation for court admissibility. Any sample that tested positive during Screening requires a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. At this point, the drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug testing is considered the most challenging approach.

A positive screening result proceeds to Confirmation, which occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. From Accessioning through to Confirmation, the whole lab process is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments have the ability to reveal drug use for upwards of 90 days, unlike urine tests that possess a more limited detection window.
  • Hard to fake results: Attempting to deceive a hair drug test is highly challenging, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Tracks historical use: It captures drug usage trends over time, instead of just reflecting recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Does not identify recent consumption: There is an approximate time delay of 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically pricier when compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can vary due to factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
