Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Syracuse, Indiana. For those seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol exam, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers available nationwide for conducting such tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or alternative body hair, these tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or facilitate other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing approaches have increasingly integrated hair follicle evaluations. Various employers, court systems, and substance abuse specialists opt for hair drug testing over traditional urine analyses. Such tests are valued by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies and are mandated by courts and probation authorities. The notable advantage of hair testing lies in its extensive detection window, spanning up to 90 days, observed during collection, and being difficult to compromise. Nevertheless, urine tests maintain superior accuracy for detecting recent drug usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When sampled near the root, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch lock of about 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the root provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or more than 10-panel tests, a 150mg sample is advised. We recommend weighing the specimen with a jeweler's scale. If head hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. For head hair, we specify scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to any other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab process of generating a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial introduction of a sample into a lab’s system. This step confirms the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any needed data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an early, rapid assessment for abusive substances. Though Screening is an economical way to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive initial screening needs confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples that test probably positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a probable positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening findings is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with suppositional positive results receive a wash before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to deceive: Hair drug tests are tough to evade, thus producing more reliable results.
  • Offers historical data: It displays a pattern of drug usage over time, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Syracuse, IN, hair follicle testing demonstrates distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. One of the principal benefits is its superior detection period, allowing for the identification of substance use over a much longer timeframe. This attribute provides employers with more comprehensive insights into an individual's history of drug consumption.

Additionally, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests in reliability. Since hair samples are collected under strict supervision, the chance of tampering or sample adulteration is minimized. This high reliability makes hair testing an invaluable resource for employers looking to uphold stringent drug-free workplace policies.

Extended Detection Window

For employers in Syracuse, IN, hair follicle testing offers a significant edge with its extended detection window. Unlike other methods, hair analysis can track drug use from the past 90 days, providing a detailed view of an individual's substance history. This feature is particularly beneficial for employers aiming to make informed hiring decisions based on long-term behavior patterns.

The extended detection window ensures that occasional and regular drug users are more likely to be identified than with short-term tests. Employers gain a more complete picture of an applicant's commitment to a drug-free lifestyle, making hair testing an essential tool for comprehensive substance assessments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Syracuse, IN set the gold standard for tamper-resistant drug testing methods. One of the most significant advantages is their resilience against sample adulteration, which often plagues more traditional testing techniques like urine analysis. This feature provides undeniable and unwavering results vital for maintaining trust in drug testing processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
