Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Cylinder, Iowa. When in need of a hair or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing spans across Nationwide locations ready to perform your assessment. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our hair tests identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored testing services.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing methods have gained popularity over traditional tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair tests instead of urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, along with court and probationary representatives, find it beneficial due to its extended drug detection window of 90 days. The observed collection makes cheating difficult, however, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol use. It offers a comprehensive history of substance interaction, capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. By acquiring a sample near the scalp, a detection timeframe of up to 90 days for substances can be achieved. This method of sample collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and conveniently transportable.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is considered the perfect sample size for initial screenings and verifications. For additional verifications, such as EtG or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg hair specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair cannot be provided, a comparable amount of body hair can be utilized. Here, head hair refers strictly to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four core stages in processing a drug test result at the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a sample is initially processed into the laboratory's records. It incorporates verifying that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any needed data input not covered by an electronic system for chain of custody.

The Screening phase involves an initial check for drug presence. Although it provides an affordable means to dismiss substance usage for most samples, any tentative positive results require confirmation for legal validity. Samples with positive preliminary results mandate further confirmation.

In cases of preliminary positive results in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as in urine or saliva tests), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging method to execute.

Positive screening results are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process before the confirmation stage if necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, complies with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify substance use for up to three months, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • High integrity: The robustness of a hair drug test minimizes the potential for cheating, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Historical insights: Provides data about drug usage patterns over time, rather than recent usage only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes approximately one week for drugs to show up in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug residues found in hair samples.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these analyses actually examine the hair strand, not the follicle located under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in Cylinder, IA by offering a longer detection window. While urine tests can identify recent usage, hair tests can uncover drug use history over months, providing a reliable and comprehensive overview of an individual’s substance use patterns. This capability makes hair testing the preferred choice for those looking for thoroughness and accuracy in results.

Extended Detection Window

In Cylinder, IA, hair follicle testing is unparalleled in its ability to detect drug use over an extensive period, up to 90 days. This extended detection window allows employers to gain deeper insights into an applicant or employee’s history with substances, far surpassing the capabilities of shorter-term testing methods like urine tests. This leads to better-informed hiring and retention decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Cylinder, IA provides a tamper-resistant method for identifying drug use. Its collection and testing process significantly reduce the chances of sample contamination or tampering, ensuring that results remain reliable and immune to fraudulent activities. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
