Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Goldfield, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair examinations. Whether it's drug or alcohol analysis, our centers are positioned nationwide to execute these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or another body part suffices. These hair assessments can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other intricate evaluations.

More and more, drug testing procedures now incorporate hair follicle evaluations. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts lean towards this method over traditional urine evaluations. Companies with no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers favor the hair-based test. Its main advantage is its extended drug detection span of up to 90 days, coupled with a monitored collection method that resists deception. However, for evaluating substance use within a recent 5-day timeframe, urine testing remains unparalleled in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an influential method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and narcotics by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it develops. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and narcotics. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, constituting the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial inclusion of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process incorporates validating that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid drug abuse check. While Screening is efficient for ruling out drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result demands confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepped for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations considerably lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to the shorter time frame of urine tests.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronicles usage data: It delivers a usage pattern over a span, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expenditure: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
