In Haverhill, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. For those in need of specialized hair drug or alcohol testing, we offer expertise across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is collected from the scalp or body. Our tests can analyze various substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized options.

The popularity of hair follicle drug testing has surged in recent years, often surpassing traditional urine tests. Employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists are opting for this method due to its long detection period. This test, favored by zero-tolerance workplaces and probation programs, covers up to 90 days of drug history and is collected under supervision to prevent tampering. For recent use, however, urine tests remain the most effective tool.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has established itself as an effective tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands can trap biomarkers, revealing a historical pattern of substance use. When samples are taken from near the scalp, the detection period for substances can extend up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp equates to about 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirming. For EtG, additional assessments, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, similar amounts of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves making sure the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, giving it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data input missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for abused drugs. Although it's cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, positively screened samples require confirmation for legal admissibility. Any sample with presumptively positive results in Screening necessitates a further confirmation stage.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is used for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Samples registering as presumptive positives are cleansed before confirming, as needed. The entirety of the lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the guidelines of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a period of up to 90 days, compared to shorter periods for urine tests.
  • Hard to tamper: Hair drug tests have higher accuracy due to their resistance to tampering.
  • Offers historical insights: It can showcase a timeline of drug use stretching beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection in hair emerges roughly 5-7 days post-drug ingestion.
  • Expense: Hair tests are generally pricier compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Result disparities: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the strand of hair rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
